The Young Mens Christian Association or YMCA as it is commonly known is a world renowned not for profit organisation based in 124 countries worldwide. There are over 14,000 local YMCAs with more than 45 million members
History
1840
|
George Williams founded the 1st YMCA in London during the industrial revolution. |
1851
|
YMCAs formed in Great Britain, Canada, United States, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands and France. First Australian branch opens in Adelaide. |

Branches of the YMCA open in Sydney and Melbourne. |
| 1855 |
First world conference of YMCAs. |
| 1891 |
Basketball was invented by Dr James Naismith while studying at the YMCA International Training School in Sprinfield, Massachusetts using peach baskets tacked to the gym wall, as a means for students to get involved in physical activity during the winter months. |

Volleyball invented by YMCA as an alternative to Basketball for older members of the YMCA. |
1901

Henry Dunant co founder of the Geneva YMCA wins first ever Nobel Peace prize. |

Fathers day was invented to recognise the significant role fathers and male role models play in our communities. |

The National committee of the YMCAS of Australia was formed. |
