The Bridge Project - rebuilding young lives

Date Published: 5/05/2010

A new program aimed at breaking the cycle of offending among young West Australians was launched on 3 May at YMCA Perth HQ by The Hon Brendan O'Connor MP, Minister for Home Affairs.

The Bridge Project is set to reduce re-offending rates among young people – in particular Aboriginal young people - by creating meaningful employment opportunities and offering education, training and workplace mentoring following their release from detention.

The Bridge Project has been made possible in WA as a result of a $500,000 funding injection from the Australian Government under the Proceeds of Crime Act, which allows confiscated funds to be given back to the Australian community in an endeavour to prevent and reduce the harmful effects of crime.

The first local businesses to offer support to the program are transport operator Linfox and engineering company Bilfinger Berger Services. Both companies have offered an initial eight-10 week work placement for participants, which may lead to full time jobs.

In return, the YMCA will assess participants and match employers with ‘work ready’ young people, in addition to subsidising wages for the period of their work placement.
