In May 2007, YMCA Perth announced its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality across all of its state wide activities by 2012.

What have we achieved so far?

  • 100% reduction in GHG emissions from electricity use at our seven childcare centres
  • Employed a Sustainability Officer
  • Motor Vehicle policy aimed at reducing vehicle emissions
  • Waste Audit

What are we doing in future?

  • Tree planting excursions
  • Composting facilities for OSHC centres
  • Approval of the Environmental Plan
  • Waste Wise policy for OSHC centres
  • Purchase carbon credits to offset emissions
  • Purchase Photovoltaic panels
  • YMCA Perth Environmental Policy

What can you do to help the environment?

  • Turn off light switches and air-conditioning if last to leave the room
  • Switch off appliances when not in use
  • Ensure there are no leaking taps in your workplace
  • Avoid printing emails
  • Print double-sided when possible
  • Recycle waste paper, food and beverage containers

Waste Wise Project

The Waste Wise Project, funded by the Department of Environment and Conservation, has been operational since May 2009. The aim of the project is to effectively reduce waste production at child care centres, through the supply of worm farms and paper shredding machines.

Reduce - Reuse - Recycle

The project has significant educational qualities. According to Kinross Child care centre's supervisor, Belinda Muller, "The children have spent a great deal of time feeding and nurturing the worms. It has given those children who sometimes feel excluded, an opportunity to become involved and a topic to share with other children. Ultimately they have found it easier to get involved. It has also been a great way to explore nature, and gives the children a sense of ownership."
